Clinton in the Middle

John Ibbitson writing in Tuesday's Globe and Mail about Hillary Clinton’s likely win of the Democratic nomination for president has this to say:

How did she do it? There may be three factors. First, the organization. The Clintons built a formidable political machine to advance Bill Clinton's presidential prospects, and Ms. Clinton inherited that machine.

Second, the husband. Bill Clinton was a highly popular president, and that popularity was enhanced by the travails of his successor. Voters appear to approve of his presence, and look forward to having him back in the White House as first gentleman.

Third, the end of ideology. National polls report that voters are fed up with the ideological divide that has formed between the Democratic and Republican parties. They want a president who can get things done, who can navigate legislation through Congress, who will balance the budget, who will get the United States out of Iraq without giving away the store to the terrorists, who can fix the health-care mess and improve the schools and mend the broken infrastructure.

While too early to call her the winner, it is starting to look like the nomination is Hillary’s to lose. Factors one and two are significant, but factor three is the one that’s gonna bring it home. Senator Clinton seems to get that we need to ratchet down the political rhetoric. I am not saying she has never slammed a republican! So you don’t need to post any and every example you find here. I do think she is the only candidate in either party who has started to reach out to those Americans who want a government that works across party lines. She is smart, experienced and has learned that compromise can be good for the country. Don’t know if it will be enough for her to win the presidency – but if the election was today – she’d get my vote.

I used to joke about Barack Obama's politics on the issue of wealth redistribution- he basically wants to take all of your money and stand on a street corner in Chicago and hand it out. (BTW, the regulars on Ellen's 10th Dist. Blog called me a racist for that statement).

But lately, I've been worrying that Hillary is even worse on this subject. Here's a couple of her more telling statements:

(1) 'We're going to take things away from you on behalf of the common good.'

(2) 'It's time for a new beginning, for an end to government of the few, by the few, and for the few, and to replace it with shared responsibility for shared prosperity.'

(3) '(We) can't just let business as usual go on, and that means something has to be taken away from some people.'

(4) 'We have to build a political consensus, and that requires people to give up a little bit of their own turf in order to create this common ground.'

(5) 'I certainly think the free-market has failed.'

(6) 'I think it's time to send a clear message to what has become the most profitable sector in (the) entire economy - that they are being watched.'

Hat Tip: Backyard Conservative

I still like Hillary better than Obama, though. It is worthy of note that now the mainstream media has just about decided that the race (or at least the Dem nomination) is her's to lose. It's probably a good thing that the debate is shaping up to be not about whether a woman can win the presidency--it's whether she can be stopped...

Ellen Beth Gill is lying about Jay Footlik.

Jay is working way harder than Dan. Sorry Dan sent out that email against Jay.

Hey Anon.......have you just realized that most of what Ms. Gill writes has no resemblance to the truth! Her blind hatred of Congressman Kirk is so over the top, so vicious and out of control that she loses any credibility. Her supporters drink the same "kool aid".......and in this district it just doesn't work. Let her continue to rail away....it has just the opposite effect.....but then the majority of 10th district voters have never heard of her, her blog, or care about what she says. Too bad she has decided to eliminate any of the comments from Team America.......now all she has is her followers.......kind of lame reading these days!

Dear UM fans- please continue to follow the adventures of UM here, but check out TA's new blog at http://teamamerica10th.blogspot.com

Pretty sad that TA had to set up his own blog to allow himself to have a say as to the partisan drivel that Ellen of the Tenth spews out, but since she summarily kicked me off her blog, I have no other choice.

I had to laugh, though, as I left her a post with my new blog address and she get it deleted within 15 minutes. When I e-mailed her to let her know I was impressed with her promptness, she deleted that post and then enabled comment moderation so she could go to sleep without worrying about TA getting any free advertising! So much for her commitment to freedom of speech...
